The Bemis Sugar House
Rte 8A
The Bemis sugarhouse gives you a unique experience. We have had various sugarhouses on the property since the late 1890’s, except for one year due to family illness. We now set about 900 taps on pipeline and 150 buckets. We use a small bulldozer and gathering tank to collect the sap, which does not run into the sugarhouse. Our sugarhouse is one of the few with an oil fired evaporator, 4ft x12ft Leader “Special”. We still use one of the first reverse osmosis machines. Reverse osmosis is a high pressure filtration system to assist in removing water from the sap before boiling. The highlight of the day is a conversation with Bud, “a real Vermonter” who will be glad to tell you about sugaring in the “good ole days”.
